Should you as a business owner be running your own Google AdWords campaign?  Here are two important considerations before making that decision.

The question is whether to set up and manage the campaign yourself, or hire a professional.  The answer to that question depends on two important criteria:

1.  Your time.  Do you have the time to stay on top of your campaign?  The amount of time and work that it takes to get good results with your online advertising (e.g.  Google AdWords) is much more than you might think.  Managing your own campaign requires the commitment of 5 to 10 hours a week.  This does not include the time required to learn how to do online advertising effectively.

Why so many hours a week?  In a word: adjustments.  You spend your time adding new keywords, taking keywords out that are not working well, adjusting your bids (so your ad shows up in the right position), adding negative keywords that you do not want to pay for, writing new ads and testing them against the old ads (to improve results).  There are many other adjustments that you need to stay on top of to insure good results. 

Sure, you could set it and forget it, but you’ll insure the same results as a race car or a sports team that makes no adjustments once they begin competition.  You will end up paying twice as much as you need to pay and only get 25% of the results.  This is not hyperbole; it is reality.

2. Your expertise.  Unfortunately, Google makes it seems so simple.  “Pick out some keywords, write an ad, and start advertising!”  That is like someone telling you regarding your business tax return, ”First, gather your paperwork.  Second, fill out your tax return, then send it in!”  It’s just not that simple, is it?  Plus, your results will be disastrous. 

The reality is you are competing against several dozen other businesses, many if not most of them being managed by professionals.  Google shows your ad based on hundreds of factors, including what your competition is doing.  If you do not really understand the nuances of those factors, your results will be dismal.

For example, I have seen two different campaigns in the same industry have a 200-300% difference in results.  In fact, here is an astonishing example from Google expert Perry Marshall.  He ran nearly identical ads that differed in results by over 3500%  The only difference was the reversal of the second and the third lines.

Personally, I would prefer to use a professional.  No different than the wisdom of using a tax accountant to fill out my corporate tax return.  An accountant knows the system and can save me thousands of dollars in deductions, rather than me doing it myself, thinking I was saving money.  Plus, I would rather use my time earning more money (doing what I do best), instead of spending untold hours trying to figure out how to make a complicated system earn some money for me.
